That drove prices to $48 an ounce. Now, 31 years later, silver is shooting higher again. The March silver futures contract closed at $32.296 per ounce , up 72 cents. Since gold is expensive, investors are turning to silver to hedge against inflation. Many fear that the Federal Reserve will not be able to control the spike in commodity prices. The Fed is buying $600 billion of treasuries and keeping interest rates near zero. European Climate Exchange chief Patrick Birley defends the carbon trading system
“Why should it be different as a commodity to the way people trade oil or gas?” As the man in charge of the world's biggest exchange for companies, banks and hedge funds to trade permits to emit carbon dioxide, Birley is fed up with the environmentalists' charge that dirty capitalists should not profit from the global effort to tackle climate change. Ahead of the Copenhagen summit next week, campaigners such as Friends of the Earth have argued that the entire system is so flawed it may need to be demolished in favour of a straightforward tax on polluters. Firstly, they… Original Article: Forum: News/Activism
Environment Agency to propose individual carbon ration cards
The Environment Agency will argue today that carbon rationing is the fairest and most effective way for the UK to meet its legally binding targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions. The Agencys chairman, Lord Smith, will propose at the organisation's annual conference in London that every citizen be provided with a “carbon account” and unique number that they submit when buying carbon-intensive items such as petrol, electricity or airline tickets. Individuals would then periodically receive statements that show the carbon impact of each purchase and how much of their annual ration has been used up. If they exceeded this ration,… Original Article: Forum: News/Activism
Furious investors warn troubled Dubai it will ‘never raise a penny again’
Furious bondholders have arranged emergency talks with Dubai officials this week in an effort to get some clarity on the financial health of the state-owned company Dubai World, which caused widespread panic on world markets last week when it asked creditors for a six-month standstill on debt repayments. A conference call has been organised by the New York-based hedge fund QVT Financial, after an attempt last week was abandoned when the telephone system collapsed under the weight of calls. Investors are angry that the announcement was made at the start of the Islamic Eid and US Thanksgiving holidays, leaving them… Original Article: Forum: News/Activism
Save the SEALs: A serious nation doesn’t prosecute its heroes
The fact that this case has come this far shows an astonishing lack of perspective. While these three patriotic young men stand before a military judge to answer a terrorist complaint about an alleged thrown punch, CIA- and Air Force-operated drone aircraft rain hellfire missiles on terror suspects, killing them and anyone who happens to be nearby, whether or not they have the right target. Fighting a war is dirty business. As George Orwell is reputed to have said, “we sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would… Original Article: Forum: News/Activism
