Market Wrap-Up for Dec.31 (APC, BHP, FCX, POT, MOS, MON, SCHN, more)

As we get set to wrap up 2010, we currently have 90 dividend stocks on our recommended list. Of those, only 8 of the names are currently lower from where we initially recommended the names. None of those that are lower are down more than 4%. We hope to continue to outperform as we get into 2011. At the end of the day, it comes down to results for investors and for ourselves at Dividend.com. We know the more we deliver, the better it will be for our business and our brand. It has been a relatively quiet week as is usually the case at the end of the year. We have little in the way of big stories or earnings. Anadarko Petroleum ( APC ) continued to move higher following yesterday’s rumor of a deal with BHP Billiton ( BHP ). Commodity plays ended the year in style, with Freeport McMoran ( FCX ), and Potash Corp ( POT ) seeing gains. It was a relatively good year for the markets with the Dow closing up 11%, S&P up 13%, and the Nasdaq finishing 17% higher. Looking ahead to next week, there will be some earnings we will be able to talk about. Names that are set to report include Mosaic ( MOS ), Monsanto ( MON ), Schnitzer Steel ( SCHN ), and others. Be sure to catch up with our weekend watchlists on Dividend.com Premium. There are tons of names that could be candidates for inclusion on our recommended list and the weekend posts will have all that covered. Have a great new year everybody and be safe if you’re traveling. See you in 2011! Market Wrap-Up for Dec.30 (BHP, APC, CF, MOS, AGU, more)

Filed in Anadarko Petroleum, bhp billiton, dividend, Gold, Gold Investment, o, shares by on December 30, 2010 0 Comments

As I look back at how dividend stocks fared, as well as our recommendations, we are certainly pleased by the performance, but there were some areas of the markets that we missed. The first area we did not embrace as quickly as we would have liked was the REIT space. The stocks actually led the way back from the 2009 lows and we were hesitant on pulling the trigger. We do have exposure to the space, but we certainly missed getting in a bit sooner. Another area we were totally surprised with was the hotel/lodging space. The stocks proved super-resilient, but with tiny dividend yields, we still didn’t embrace brands such as Marriott International ( MAR ) and Starwood Hotels ( HOT ). You can say that we should have been more aggressive with gold-mining plays, but everyone knows my thoughts on the “crowded trade”. We have been a bit more aggressive in the second half of 2010 with stocks that have lower dividend yields, as the valuation work we have been doing shows the aggressive recommendations have the potential to see their stock prices continuing to grow. We are always looking to improve our performance and there will certainly be tough calls we will have to make as we dig deeper into 2011. We are keeping a close eye on particular dividend stocks that have had some nice runs and it may be getting close for some of them to come off the recommended list. When we remove a name, we are simply telling investors that we would not initiate or add any further capital to the name. It is not a “sell” call. But that said, if the stock you own in your portfolio drops 25% from its 52 week high, you should put it on your radar and find out why this is happening. Investors can not be afraid to trim a position. There have been many great brands that have lost their way, despite paying dividends. It is every investor’s responsibility to take charge of their portfolio and have the discipline to make changes, and that includes selling a stock that is pulling down a portfolio’s performance. 2011 should be a fun year. I have a book coming out, titled “Be a Dividend Millionaire” and it exciting to see this finished product, following tons of work to put it together. We are definitely seeing dividend investing being more and more embraced. In a recent AP story, legendary personal finance guru Suze Orman talked positively about dividend stocks and sees big opportunities for investors that are looking for income. She talked about shifting some funds out of bonds and into high-quality dividend paying stocks as well as Dividend ETFs. Be sure to check out our latest Top 100 Dividend Stocks on Our Watchlist post we published earlier today. The newsflow continues to be a bit slower in this last week of the year, as has been the volume. There was a story out this morning about BHP Billiton ( BHP ) perhaps considering a bid for Anadarko Petroleum ( APC ) that has both those shares moving today. Fertilizer plays CF Industries ( CF ), Agrium…

Report: BHP Billiton May Offer $90 a Share for Anadarko Petroleum (BHP, APC)

According to a report in London’s Daily Mail, BHP Billiton Limited ( BHP ) could soon make a $90 per-share offer to buy fellow oil giant Anadarko Petroleum Corporation ( APC ). That offer would represent a 27% premium top APC’s Wednesday closing price of $70.73. The report didn’t specify any sources for the information, but said that BHP CEO Marius Kloppers is “desperate” to get a deal done. BHP has engaged in multiple unsuccessful takeover attempts this year, including a much-publicized failed bid for fertilizer maker Potash Corp ( POT ). BHP shares were mostly flat in premarket trading Thursday, while Anadarko shares soared 5%. The Bottom Line Shares of Anadarko Petroleum ( APC ) have a .51% dividend yield, based on last night’s closing stock price of $70.73. Shares of BHP Billiton ( BHP ) have a 1.94% dividend yield, based on last night’s closing stock price of $92.80. Neither Billiton Limited ( BHP ) nor Anadarko Petroleum Corporation ( APC ) are currently recommended by Dividend.com.
