The alarm on Jeramy Ailes' wristwatch kept beeping long after he was killed in Fallujah. Bi-bip. Bi-bip. Bi-bip. It startled his cousin who escorted his body home when it rang out from the blue velvet pouch that contained the dog tags and ring he wore the day he died. It comforted his parents when it beeped every afternoon from the living room bookshelf of their Gilroy home. “It felt like his presence,” his mother, Lana Ailes, said. It sounded like a heartbeat.
