2011 Gold and Silver Predictions

2011 Gold and Silver Predictions

Gold prices are off to an expected pullback for the year. But this short-term dip won’t last long… After forming a triple top pattern at the very end of 2010, the price of gold has fallen nearly 5% to about $1,350 an ounce. Take a look: We may continue to see a bit of downward pressure on gold prices in the near term; but as economic problems continue to drive investors into safe-haven hard assets, the price of gold will be headed higher later this year. That means if you’ve been waiting for an opportunity to make a little money in gold, the market may be carving out a nice little spot to make some bullion purchases at a decent price to prepare for the next leg up. There are many who estimate gold will top the $1,500 level this year. But I think we’ll see gold make a heart-stopping race to $1,700 an ounce by the end of the summer. Silver is also going to be a big winner for us in 2011. The demand for silver as an investment has increased dramatically over the past several years as the retail market has become more accepting of silver as money and a store of wealth. And as gold prices approach $2,000 an ounce, I believe silver will be preferred by many — if not most — retail customers as a cheaper alternative that provides the level of wealth protection investors might be looking for. With that in mind, I think the price of silver will break $50 an ounce this year. Both gold and silver will be highly profitable for investors this year. But the real money will be made from the junior companies that explore for new resources and develop new projects to mine for these precious metals… Shares of junior gold and silver exploration companies can often skyrocket overnight — especially when they make new discoveries. And making new discoveries is their specialty… You’d think that the most talented precious metal prospectors work for the major gold companies like Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX) and Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM), but that isn’t the case. You see, the most talented mine finders stand to make a lot more money if they go out on their own. A top geologist with a major that makes a big discovery might get a sizable bonus and bigger …

Market Wrap-Up for Jan.14 (JPM, PNC, STT, GS, NEM, MEE, GE, more)

As I progress through my early 40′s, I like to think back to how I approached money in my earlier years. Being an entrepreneur, there is always a constant need to invest in your business and in yourself. That said, I still regret not being more proactive when it came to thinking about long-term wealth and financial security. The beauty of compound interest (which dividend stocks are great at providing when you re-invest those dividends) is something to marvel at when you start tabulating the numbers. You can use our Compounding Interest Calculator to measure your hypothetical rate of return, based on the number of years and amount of money you invest. Of course, getting married, having kids, and buying a home can put quite a dent in your best-laid plans. What was Mike Tyson’s famous line? I believe it was “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.” Now I’m not trying to liken a boxing match to your family life, but the fact remains that the expenses you incur in adulthood can take quite a toll on your financial goals. Some investors are now in a position of making up for lost time, scrambling to start or build their retirement nest egg at a later stage in their lives than they’d prefer. The way I see it, the solution to this problem is simple: put more money each month to work for you. Some things you learn with age, and when it comes to money, most of us don’t start to really appreciate the power it has in our lives until we look up at the scoreboard and realize we’ve lost some initial ground. The key word I used there is “initial”, because it is NEVER too late to come back and make a difference. My dad had a barber friend who bought his first house at 77 years old! That’s the way you have to look at life. Never stop trying to achieve your goals, no matter how late you are in the game. I don’t care if all you can afford is $25 a month to start investing. Pick an online broker and get an account open if you don’t have one already. If you’re employed, set up an IRA and fund it with the maximum contribution you can make every year. And if you have kids, get a Coverdell Education Savings Account started for each of them and fund those as well. If your employer matches your 401k contributions, then do that too! Do whatever you can to make it happen. In time, you’ll look back …

Barrick Gold (ABX): The Best Bet Among Senior Gold Miners

Barrick Gold (ABX): The Best Bet Among Senior Gold Miners

Filed under: Newsletters , Barrick Gold (ABX) , Commodities , Stocks to Buy “In my view, the best value in gold miners is the senior producers, and the best investment from that class is Barrick Gold ( ABX ),” says Ian Wyatt . The editor of Top Stock Insights explains, “This company will benefit over the next few years from its high quality diversified portfolio of assets which includes around 140 million ounces of gold reserve. “It’s not a particularly fast growing company, but it’s got the bull market in gold going for it. Additionally, it has a number of projects it can build and most importantly the capital to begin construction. Market Wrap-Up for Dec.16 (FDX, ABX, DFS, V, MA, WYNN, SBUX, more)

There was an interesting story out today talking about how Bill Gross’s $250 billion PIMCO Total Return Fund may be investing 10% of its assets in equity securities in 2011 — and has seemingly turned a lackluster market right back up. Gross, the so-called “bond king,” has grown much less bullish on bonds, but has been on record in some of his recent newsletters that he likes income plays such as dividend stocks for long-term investors. We sent out our Thursday “Dividend Top 100 Names on Our Watchlist” post this morning. Each Thursday we look at our various proprietary watchlists and sort through the names that are trading at or near all-time highs and put them in a list to share with all our Premium subscribers. Outside of looking for names that we feel are becoming a real bargain, this list is what we are using to find our next recommendations. Of course, the stocks on this list that have low or minimal dividend yields would only be suited for “aggressive” investors who are seeking growth over yield. I hope everyone checks it out! There appeared to be a bit of rotation out of gold today going on with mining plays Agnico-Eagle Mines ( AEM ) and Barrick Gold ( ABX ) both getting hit hard, along with gold prices. On the earnings front, Discover Financial Services ( DFS

Market Wrap-Up for Oct.13 (INTC, JPM, NEM, ABX, CSX, GLD, more)

Market Wrap-Up for Oct.13 (INTC, JPM, NEM, ABX, CSX, GLD, more)

With earnings season now underway, the markets could be setting up for some more near-term melt-up action. We saw a taste of that today, but we did see the markets pull off the highs in the last hour. As I have been mentioning, we are sitting in very over-bought territory. Back in my trading days, the strategy was simple. Buy high, sell higher, but in the process keep moving up the trailing stops on my longs, all the while keeping my sell-stop orders tight in the event of a quick reversal lower. We are certainly seeing more dividend stocks that are set to flash the green signal for us to add them to our recommended list, but it is simply a question of patience as we look for further opportunities. Our current list of 48 recommended names continues to grow nicely, as do the returns for investors in those names. CSX Corp ( CSX ) was a big earnings winner today, after the railroad operator easily beat Q3 estimates. J.P. Morgan ( JPM ) and Intel ( INTC ) closed lower despite some early analyst accolades on both companies’ earnings reports. The big story once again today was gold, with gold prices up over $23 an ounce in today’s action. Technically things still look fine for gold, but it is not a trade without risk for those of you that are putting aggressive capital to work. Whether you are buying the Gold ETF ( GLD ), or mining plays like Barrick Gold ( ABX ) and Newmont Mining

Market Wrap-Up for Oct.4 (AXP, FCX, SLE, NEM, ABX, SNY, more)

Market Wrap-Up for Oct.4 (AXP, FCX, SLE, NEM, ABX, SNY, more)

The beginning of the trading week (and month, for that matter) got off to a rough start. Conventional wisdom states that the first couple of trading sessions in a new quarter can be strong because of fund inflows that get put to work in the market. There’s no such thing occurring today, however, continuing the trend from Friday, which also lacked buying sizzle. I saw a report recently from the Employee Benefit Research Institute that said as of 2009, Social Security accounted for almost half elderly women’s income, compared with just over a third for elderly men. The big thing I am taking out of this is the fact that the over-reliance on Social Security is a problem for many seniors. I hope that readers see this stat and that it encourages you to get started as soon as possible to building up a richer retirement nest egg. I am so looking forward to my book, “Be a Dividend Millionaire” to be released sometimes in the spring. It is a book dedicated for the men and women that are working their butts off and who can use a great template in how to get started building a wealthy retirement, with not much money required to get started. Back to today’s action, gold-mining plays were among the commodity sector names seeing red. Stocks like Newmont Mining ( NEM ) and Barrick Gold ( ABX ) pulled down, as did Freeport McMoran ( FCX ) – which was downgraded this morning by a Citigroup analyst. American Express ( AXP ) was sold heavily on news that the company’s merchant contracts may be in violation of U.S. antitrust laws, according to a suit just filed by the U.S. government. A couple of deal-rumored names made headlines earlier as pharma play Sanofi-Aventis ( SNY ) went with a hostile bid to acquire Genzyme ( GENZ ). Also, shares of Sara Lee ( SLE ) saw some action on speculation a private equity firm was sniffing

Market Wrap-Up for Sept.30 (NEM, ABX, MO, RAI, FCX, CF, more)

Market Wrap-Up for Sept.30 (NEM, ABX, MO, RAI, FCX, CF, more)

It appears the momentum crowd may be satisfied with September’s gains as the market gains this morning reversed lower on this last day of the month. Even gold prices pulled back, with mining stocks like Newmont Mining ( NEM ) and Barrick Gold ( ABX ) giving back some of the recent gains. Also heading lower were names related to other parts of the commodity space, including CF Industries ( CF ) , Mosaic ( MOS ) , Deere ( DE ) , and Freeport McMoran ( FCX ) . There was an analyst downgrade of tobacco companies Altria Group ( MO ) and Reynolds American ( RAI ) this morning. Both of those stocks continue to be big winners on our Best Dividend Stocks list and their 6%-plus dividend yields are still attractive, but a pull-back would certainly be welcome as far getting better entry levels. Volume did creep up by the close, with the NYSE trading 4.28 Billion shares and the Nasdaq trading 2.34 Billion shares./. As for our recommended list, we are always monitoring our data for any potential changes. Going into today’s action, just 3 of our 47 recommended names are trading lower than when we first recommended the names, with the worst performer being down a mere 2% (and that’s not including dividend payouts). I hope everyone is enjoying the new video segments our editor Tom Reese and I are producing on the site. Feel free to reach out to us with more ideas on what you would like to see discussed. Dividend Market Wrap-Up for July 9 (V, NSC, ACE, NEM, GE, AA, YUM, more)

We were happy to see the markets get some of its mojo back this week, but we will still be looking for better volume. . We pointed out an example in yesterday’s late day wrap-up about how the volume during sell-offs continues to be quite a bit larger than the volume on days we see the averages move substantially higher. We refuse to ignore the distribution factor and will not be swayed by market experts that pooh-pooh this trend. Today’s NYSE totaled 3.5 Billion shares, way off the 5 Billion number we have been seeing and way off the 6 Billion total during a couple of last week’s distribution days. We continue to monitor the names on our “recommended” list as well as many other names that are in our database. There are some potential names that are getting more attractive from a dividend yield standpoint that we are considering adding, but the list is very short. We will let subscribers know if the changes are made or if we need to trim more names from our narrowing list of favorites. As for today’s action, we saw Wall Street analyst upgrades help push up stocks like Visa ( V ) and Norfolk Southern ( NSC ) . Ace LTD. ( ACE ) ran up on news it will be added to the S&P 500. Commodity plays bounced up with gold stocks making a bit of a comeback after a recent pullback. Shares of Newmont Mining ( NEM ) , Barrick Gold ( ABX ) , and Agnico-Eagle Mines ( AEM ) were all higher. Looking ahead to next week, we will start to get some of the bigger names reporting results, such as General Electic ( GE ) , Alcoa ( AA ) , Yum Brands ( YUM ) just to name a few. Be sure to check out Dividend.com Premium this weekend for the latest watchlist updates as well.
