Vanessa Williams: Looking a White Gift House in the Mouth
On Sunday night, Sandra Bullock won Best Actress at the 82nd Academy Awards for her portrayal of gun-toting Republican Leigh Anne Tuohy in “The Blind Side.” “The Blind Side” is essentially a high-class, made-for-TV movie based on the true story of the Touhy family's adoption of impoverished and abandoned black teenager Michael Oher, who would go on to play as an offensive lineman in the NFL. The movie is heartwarming, and Bullock is excellent in the part. She clearly deserved her Oscar. Leave it to the gals on “The View” to tear apart this heartwarming story. Vanessa Williams, sitting in… Original Article: Forum: News/Activism

What credit-card payoff? Consumers are dumping debt
CHICAGO (MarketWatch) — Credit-card debt has been falling for 16 straight months but consumers aren't paying off their financial obligations as much you might think. Instead, they're walking away from the debt, forcing credit-card issuers to write off as much as 90% of that reported drop, according to a new report by CardHub.com. U.S. banks charged off a record $83.3 billion in credit-card losses last year. That makes up the bulk of the $93.2 billion drop in outstanding credit-card debt that was reported by the Federal Reserve for 2009. Original Article: Forum: News/Activism

Drones and Terrorism
Combat drones are much in the news these days. Such weapons constitute the major current focus of effort against organized jihadi terrorism, with nearly weekly strikes carried out in the unassimilated areas of northern Pakistan and the Taliban-occupied districts of Afghanistan, along with less frequent strikes elsewhere. Drones have compiled an impressive record, taking out a number of high-ranking al-Qaeda and Taliban leaders, many of whom likely believed that they were perfectly safe until that persistent whining sound started getting louder. The MQ-1 Predator has achieved the status of legend, with the MQ-9 Reaper not far behind. New models, such… Original Article: Forum: News/Activism

Does Rush remember ‘94? I’ll say it again: The party of Palin/Limbaugh can win in 2010–but not 2012
Meet Rush Limbaugh: the latest blowhard to learn nothing from history, thereby fating himself — and his flock — to repeat it. Rush was on the air back in 1993 and 1994, when Republicans found themselves in essentially the same position theyre now in: locked out of the White House and staring up at imposing Democratic majorities in the House and Senate. With Rush egging them on, they defined themselves by their blanket, loud, and often hysterical opposition to Bill Clintons agenda (and to his legitimacy as commander in chief). They killed his stimulus bill by filibuster, offered zero votes… Original Article: Forum: News/Activism

Serbs had to battle an Islamist threat, too
I am not defending Radovan Karadzic (”Karadzic blames Islamic militants for war,” Web, Monday, and “Karadzic blames Muslims for killing,” Geopolitics, Tuesday). However, there is a basis for his claim that Osama bin Laden's Muslim militants were active in the Balkan war. Instead of being honest brokers in what was a civil war, the Clinton administration, along with a willing media, successfully portrayed Serbian forces, including the Serbian people collectively, as the only villains. In 1993, the government of Bosnian President Alija Izetbegovic issued a passport to bin Laden at the Bosnian Embassy in Vienna, thereby enabling themaster terrorist to… Original Article: Forum: News/Activism

Poll: U.S. has lost global standing under Obama. Democrats fare poorly on security
A majority of Americans say the United States is less respected in the world than two years ago and believe President Obama and other Democrats fall short of Republicans on the issue of national security, according to a poll by two left-leaning groups. The Democracy Corps-Third Way survey released Monday finds that by a 10-point margin 51 percent to 41 percent Americans think the standing of the United States has dropped during the first 13 months of Mr. Obama's presidency. “This is surprising, given the global acclaim and Nobel peace prize that flowed to the new… Original Article: Forum: News/Activism

Culled out(NOAA eliminating recreational fishing)
Morlock fears that “what we're seeing coming at us is an attempted dismantling of the science-based fish and wildlife model that has served us so well. There's no basis in science for the agendas of these groups who are trying to push the public out of being able to fish and recreate. Original Article: Forum: News/Activism
