SJC backs trigger-lock law on guns in homes
In a case that drew attention from the Gun Owners Action League and the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, the Supreme Judicial Court yesterday upheld a state law requiring trigger locks on guns kept in peoples homes. In what was seen by some as a victory for law enforcement and advocates of gun control, the states highest court ruled that the Second Amendment does not restrict the right of Massachusetts to impose its own rules on gun ownership. We conclude that the legal obligation safely to secure firearms in [state law] is not unconstitutional, Justice Ralph Gants wrote for… Original Article: Forum: News/Activism

Muslim student sprays teacher with tear gas after she describes al-Qaeda as a terrorist group
Lyon, France – A 15-year-old French schoolboy sprayed a teacher with teargas after she described al-Qaeda as a “terrorist group”, she told reporters on Tuesday as prosecutors began their investigation. “I had just explained that the attacks on September 11, 2001 were carried out by the terrorist organisation al-Qaeda, as is written in the text book,” said the history teacher, speaking on condition of anonymity. “He stood up and declared that al-Qaeda is not terrorist and that neither is the Taliban,” she said, adding that the boy had then pulled out a spray can and doused her and a teaching… Original Article: Forum: News/Activism

Climate science: Let’s follow the money
One of the favourite tactics of global warmists is to set up âstraw manâ arguments and knock them down. For example, theyâll say the growing number of people skeptical about claims of imminent, catastrophic, man-made global warming â including many scientists â are insanely claiming all climate science is a hoax. That might be a valid point if thatâs what most critics were saying. But itâs not. Rather, theyâre arguing that since itâs only human to âfollow the moneyâ and the big money, to say nothing of scientific prestige in the climate change field, at least pre-Climategate, was in predicting… Original Article: Forum: News/Activism

Geithner warns of rift over regulation
Tim Geithner, US Treasury secretary, has delivered a blunt warning to the European Commission that its plans to regulate the hedge fund and private equity industries could cause a transatlantic rift by discriminating against US groups. A letter sent by Mr Geithner this month to Michel Barnier, Europes internal market commissioner, makes it clear that the European Union is heading for a clash with Washington if it pushes ahead with what the US and Britain fear could be a protectionist law. The debate over the shape of future financial regulation has reached a critical point in Brussels. Diplomats… Original Article: Forum: News/Activism

Will Paterson call a special election for Massa’s district?
New York's 29th Congressional District is without a representative since former Democratic congressman Eric Massa resigned in disgrace on Monday amid scandal. It is up to New York's Governor David Paterson, a Democrat, who is embroiled in controversy himself these days, to call a special election in order to fill the vacant seat. “He can really call it whenever he wants to or he doesnt have to call it at all. He can keep it open. I am hearing it could be for some time in June or may just keep it open,” said Thomas Basile Executive Director of the… Original Article: Forum: News/Activism

Economy ‘Far too Close’ to Double Dip: Roubini
Poor economic data in the US coupled with Europe's debt crisis are contributing to an increase of the risk of the US economy going through a double-dip recession, Nouriel Roubini, who predicted the 2007 financial crisis, wrote in a research paper. At best, the US economy is headed for a U-shaped recovery this year, Roubini said. That has been his prediction in recent months. The US faces challenges in the second half, especially as fiscal stimulus measures fade, and “appears far too close to the tipping point of a double-dip recession,” he said. .. Even if the euro zone does… Original Article: Forum: News/Activism

What credit-card payoff? Consumers are dumping debt
CHICAGO (MarketWatch) — Credit-card debt has been falling for 16 straight months but consumers aren't paying off their financial obligations as much you might think. Instead, they're walking away from the debt, forcing credit-card issuers to write off as much as 90% of that reported drop, according to a new report by CardHub.com. U.S. banks charged off a record $83.3 billion in credit-card losses last year. That makes up the bulk of the $93.2 billion drop in outstanding credit-card debt that was reported by the Federal Reserve for 2009. Original Article: Forum: News/Activism

Does Rush remember ‘94? I’ll say it again: The party of Palin/Limbaugh can win in 2010–but not 2012
Meet Rush Limbaugh: the latest blowhard to learn nothing from history, thereby fating himself — and his flock — to repeat it. Rush was on the air back in 1993 and 1994, when Republicans found themselves in essentially the same position theyre now in: locked out of the White House and staring up at imposing Democratic majorities in the House and Senate. With Rush egging them on, they defined themselves by their blanket, loud, and often hysterical opposition to Bill Clintons agenda (and to his legitimacy as commander in chief). They killed his stimulus bill by filibuster, offered zero votes… Original Article: Forum: News/Activism
